Flexible sorting system for Danske Fragtmænd

How Danske Fragtmænd sorts parcels from multiple carriers in the same flow with a flexible system that handles 1,600 parcels an hour.

The challenge

Danske Fragtmænd is Denmark’s largest carrier of general cargo, delivering day-to-day parcels to 40,000 business customers from terminals across the country. Manual parcel sorting was time-consuming and capped how much capacity, efficiency and competitiveness the company could get out of its terminals.

The solution

Techsoft developed a tailored MES application (Manufacturing Execution System) to control the logistics flow on a new, flexible sorting system, with components supplied by Interroll. Parcels are sorted by volume, weight and scanned data, and the MES application queries the correct destination according to the sorting plan — data that is simultaneously fed into Danske Fragtmænd’s own tracking, ERP and WES systems.

The physical components are controlled by a Siemens PLC interfaced with the MES, and the entire system is operated via an HMI touch panel. The solution is designed for hybrid sorting, so parcels from several different carriers can be sorted in parallel within the same flow — without compromising resource utilization at the terminal.

The project launched in 2021 at Danske Fragtmænd’s terminal in Taulov, and a similar system has since been implemented at the terminals in Aalborg and Odense.

Results

  • 1,600 parcels an hour per system, sorted to 22 destinations
  • Rolled out from the first system in Taulov (2021) to the terminals in Aalborg and Odense
