Digital twins & virtual commissioning

Digital twins and virtual commissioning

Test the plant before it's built

With virtual simulation and emulation, your machinery can be tested and optimized long before the first component is installed. We develop digital models of machines and production plants so that processes, functions and capacity can be verified in a realistic virtual environment – before you build anything at all.

We test the machine before you build it

A good commissioning starts with good preparation. By building the plant in a virtual environment, we can test, evaluate and develop something that doesn't yet exist physically. This means virtual commissioning can happen before physical installation even begins, making the physical commissioning far more efficient and cost-effective.

We have many years of experience testing virtual machines and entire plant sections, and deep insight into building 1:1 3D models of transport and logistics systems that match the real plant. We use these models to trial, test and optimize PLC software in the virtual environment.

Since 2005, we've collaborated with Xcelgo, one of the market's leading suppliers of simulation and emulation software – a partnership that makes even complicated emulation tasks possible. We also use Siemens SIMIT to virtually test and commission automation systems, machines and processes at machine builders, before anything is built or started up in the physical world.

Value throughout the plant's entire lifetime

Your digital twin is built as a 1:1 electromechanical copy with built-in physical properties such as friction, speeds and accelerations. This makes it possible to test the function and quality of the PLC software before it's commissioned on-site. The digital twin creates value throughout the plant's entire lifecycle: From the initial sales and design phase, through the project itself, and on into your daily operations.

Broad experience with market-leading suppliers

  • Virtual mockups in the design phase, creating quick shared understanding of the desired functionality
  • Proof of concept, before PLC software is rolled out to the entire plant section
  • Virtual commissioning and testing of the complete PLC control delivery
  • Virtual system integration and interface testing against external control deliveries
  • Virtual FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) together with you, before any activity on the physical plant

Why digital twins pay off

The electromechanical 3D model is today a fixed part of many of our automation projects. The reason is simple: software development and testing can run in parallel with the mechanical and electrical installation, instead of waiting on each other. That significantly shortens your path to commissioning.
The benefit doesn't stop there, because capacity, throughput and bottlenecks are tested before production ramps up. This results in a higher-quality software delivery and stable operation from day one. The model doesn't lose its value once the plant is handed over.
When new needs arise and the plant needs to be rebuilt or expanded, the digital twin can be updated and used to test new functions and concepts before anything is changed on the physical plant.
